A tiny pea - and a lot of help from Western

Western researcher Isaac Luginaah holds up a black-eyed pea that will be used to help Malawians establish food security by diversifying their crops. The five-year project is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency. Read more

The 2012 Africa Institute Student Mobility Funding was awarded to meritorious undergraduate and graduate student projects undertaken in Africa. Twelve applications from two rounds were funded:

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has backed research projects at Western University aimed at improving maternal and infant health in east Africa." The $195,000 grant will fund thesis-based research projects for 16 Canadian graduate students, as well as one from Kenya and one from Rwanda. The first two graduate students from Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Jordan Bisanz and Amy McMillan, will leave for Africa on September 13th to conduct field research. Read more

It was with great pleasure I learned a few weeks ago Henri Boyi received the Western Humanitarian Award. I nominated Henri for the award last semester during my short stint as acting chair of the Department of French Studies, and unlike the many small and not-so-small duties one has to do in that role, I felt this was one that really meant something, especially if it was going to be successful. Read more

 David CechettoCIDA, Western funds eye Rwandan health care

Building on a decade-long relationship, Western University researchers and their partners in Rwanda are looking to construct a better health-care system for some of the most vulnerable in the central African nation.

Led by Western professor David Cechetto, the project hopes to bridge recently identified gaps in maternal, newborn and child health in Rwanda. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has committed $1.8 million, and Western has contributed another $800,000 in-kind, to the project. Read more
